Mark Cuban Loses $800,000 in Cyber-Phishing Attack as Cryptocurrency Hacks Surge

Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency industry, recently fell victim to a cyber-phishing attack, losing over $800,000 in cryptocurrency. The attack occurred on September 16 and targeted his MetaMask wallet, resulting in a total loss of approximately $870,000. The stolen funds included $555,000 in Ethereum and $175,000 in USDC, which were converted to Ethereum on the Coinbase exchange.

Cuban suspects a security breach may have been the cause of the theft, with speculation that hackers compromised his MetaMask private key to carry out fraudulent transactions. This incident occurred amidst a wave of high-profile hacks, including the hijacking of Vitalik Buterin’s (Ethereum’s founder) X account, leading to $700,000 in losses due to a phishing website.

Additionally, a recent report by Immunefi revealed a 65.3% increase in cyberattacks targeting the cryptocurrency market in the last quarter compared to Q2 2022. Hacking accounted for the majority (83.1%) of these incidents, even though the overall value of losses from cyberattacks decreased by 60.4% year-on-year in the second quarter.
