The U.S. government is persisting in its efforts to extradite Do-hyung Kwon, CEO of Terraform Labs, despite Montenegrin authorities’ decision to send him to South Korea. Kwon faces charges related to the Tera-Luna cryptocurrency scandal, where his company’s cryptocurrencies crashed in 2022, causing significant investor losses and triggering a chain reaction in the crypto market. While South Korea has a maximum sentence of around 40 years for economic crimes, the U.S. charges could result in a much longer prison term. Montenegro initially agreed to extradite Kwon to the U.S., but later overturned the decision, opting to send him to South Korea instead. This decision was based on the timing of extradition requests and the nature of the requests from both countries.
