Korean Prosecutors’ Office retrieved a deleted e-wallet belonging to a suspect accused of fraud and embezzlement, seizing Ethereum worth 7.6 billion won ($7.6 million). The suspect, A, allegedly defrauded 156 victims of 14.6 billion won in investment funds and embezzled 1,796 ethereum. Despite a previous 16-year prison sentence and fines, the prosecution recovered the e-wallet’s mnemonic code, leading to the seizure of the hidden assets. A is appealing the decision, while prosecutors seek forfeiture of the ethereum to prevent potential profit. This marks the first case of recovering a defendant’s personal wallet and seizing its virtual assets. Prosecutors aim to return the assets to fraud victims once the verdict is finalized, highlighting the need for improved regulations regarding virtual assets.
